Quake 2 really helped kick-start our love of GPUs and OpenGL. Unafilliated with the OpenArena team, this project allows playing the game completely within the browser. Quake was a phenomenon as well of course, but still lacks the punch that Doom delivered, and Duke 3D was fun but as others have pointed out, the multiplayer came nowhere close to Doom and Quake. OpenArena is a free clone of the famous FPS Quake III Arena. DeepMind Lab is a 3D learning environment based on id Softwares Quake III Arena via ioquake3 and other open source software. However Doom 2 brought FPS to the mainstream and was also the first game to be rated by the ESRB, and the first Mature game to boot, so still pretty influential. The first was the one that shut down businesses and universities. I vote Doom over Doom 2 as the second was, for the most part, merely an expansion of the first with new levels and some new monsters. This is probably why Doom 2 is higher profile since the Internet was still in its infancy back then so the shareware titles were confined to the underground scene. Doom and earlier games were shareware that you had to download from an FTP or BBS somewhere and then call the number to buy directly from id (or Apogee). Doom 2 was id software's first big commercial release that was sold in stores.
